Sterling Bank: N175bn Gross Earnings, N21bn Profit, 15kobo Dividend in 2022

The shareholders of one of Africa’s fastest growing companies, Sterling Bank Plc, have commended the Board of Directors, Executive Management and staff of the bank on its remarkable financial performance for the 2022 year, resulting in a recommendation of dividend of 15 kobo per ordinary share; a 50 percent increase from that paid in 2021.

The shareholders gave this commendation at the 61st Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the bank held in Lagos on Wednesday.

Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Rilwan Hamza, one of the shareholders, commended the board members and staff of the bank for the wonderful financial performance while another shareholder, Mr. Boniface Okezie, expressed delight at the level of transparency displayed by the Board and commended them for the improved dividend payout.

The shareholders urged the Board to make the most of the transition into a financial holdings company and establish more subsidiaries that will drive even more growth and increase shareholder value.

The bank’s strong performance for the 2022 financial year was derived from growth in its assets base and customers’ deposits by 14.4 percent and 9.8 percent respectively. This is despite strong economic headwinds experienced by the Nigerian economy in the year under review.

Addressing shareholders of the bank at the first meeting as a limited liability company, following its on-going transformation into a holding company structure, Chairman of Sterling Bank; Mr. Asue Ighodalo remarked that, “despite the challenges during 2022, our performance reflected our resilience and determination to deliver optimal value for our shareholders. We are pleased that we closed the year on a good note.”

Ighodalo said the bank grew profit before tax to N 20.8 billion, representing a 29 percent year-on-year increase from N 16.1 billion recorded in 2021, and a 28.5 percent growth in Profit After Taxes (PAT) to achieve the sum of N19.3 billion for 2022.

He said the PAT growth was driven by an N18.6 billion improvement in net operating income amidst heightened inflationary pressure and regulatory policies, adding that the gross earnings grew by 16.6 percent to N175.1 billion compared to N150.2 billion reported in 2021.

On business outlook for the year, the Chairman noted that “we remain very optimistic about our bank’s future and are devoted to effectively transforming our business to deliver optimal performance, and significantly offer superior services to millions of Nigerians.”

Danbatta: NCC Reviewing Licenses to Incorporate New Industry Trends

KEYNOTE SPEECH BY PROF. UMAR GARBA DANBATTA, THE EXECUTIVE VICE CHAIRMAN, NIGERIA COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION (NCC) AT THE TALK TO THE REGULATOR FORUM IN YENAGOA BAYELSA STATE, JUNE 1 & 2, 2023

It is with great delight that I welcome you all to the first `Talk-To-The Regulator ` Forum for the Year, 2023, holding in the South-South, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

The Nigeria Communications Commission, in keeping with its mandate, creates opportunities to interact with its licensees on industry issues and new trends via stakeholder fora, with a view to gathering relevant information that would further advance the development of the industry, while improving regulations and service delivery to telecom consumers.

The TTTR Forum in Yenagoa which was originally scheduled to hold in 2022 but was postponed due to the dreadful flood disaster that hit Bayelsa and some other states in the year.

The Commission, therefore, seize this opportunity to commiserate with the people of Bayelsa State and the entire nation on the worst flood disaster recorded in the history of the nation. We pray that such natural disaster shall not plaque our dear nation again, and equally believe that the state has made adequate preparations for any future occurrences.

You will agree with me that the telecom industry has witnessed milestones in more ways than one, including the rapid growth in technology, which is redefining service delivery, and creating wide and high expectations from all stakeholders. 

To keep up to date with developments in the industry, the Commission has equally taken measures to improve regulations to accommodate the rapid and continuous development.

Some of the interventions and responses of the Commission includes but are not limited to:

  • Facilitating the Roll-Out of 5G Service provision.
  • Introduction of Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) Licence to bridge the gap between unserved and underserved areas.
  • The Commission is currently reviewing the scope and structure of its existing licenses to make them more robust and to accommodate some of the identified new industry trends.
  • In line with the Nigeria National Broadband Plan (NNBP 2020 – 2025), the NCC is providing industry leadership to facilitate the achievement of 90% Broadband penetration by year 2025, and well above 50% at the end of 2023. Currently, over a One Hundred and Fifty (I50) million Nigerians have access to internet, while over eighty (80) million can access high speed internet.
  • The ‘Talk-To-The Regulator` Forum is a common platform for non-discriminatory interaction on a one-on-one basis, between the Licensees and the Regulator on several industry issues, pertinent to the Licensees and of national interest.

I am pleased to welcome our Licensees to this event and hopeful that during the 2-Day Session, we would discuss and identify the measures necessary to improve investment and service delivery.

I therefore appeal to you all to feel free to ask questions, provide feedback and proffer possible solutions that would address the concerns that might be raised during the interactive sessions.

Stanbic IBTC Bank Nigeria PMI: Recovery from Cash Crisis Continued in May

Latest PMI data indicated that the Nigerian private sector continued to recover from the cash crisis in May as access to money improved and business conditions returned to normality. Output and new orders expanded for the second month running, with the latter increasing at the fastest pace in just over a year.

Confidence remained historically subdued, however, meaning that firms continued to operate a cautious approach with regard to hiring. Input costs rose sharply again, with output prices up accordingly. That said, the rate of selling price inflation eased to the weakest since April 2020. The headline figure derived from the survey is the Stanbic IBTC Bank Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI).

Readings above 50.0 signal an improvement in business conditions in the previous month, while readings below 50.0 show a deterioration.

The headline PMI posted above the 50.0 no-change mark for the second month running in May, following the two-month sequence of decline seen around the worst of the cash crisis in the first quarter of the year. At 54.0, up from 53.8 in April, the index signaled a solid improvement in business conditions that was the most marked in 2023 so far. With access to cash improving, customer numbers increased, enabling firms to secure greater volumes of new orders in May.

New business was up sharply, with the rate of expansion the fastest since April 2022. Similarly, business activity rose for the second month running, and at a marked pace. Here, the expansion was slightly softer than in April, however.

The activity was up across each of the four broad sectors covered, with growth led by wholesale & retail. Although higher new orders encouraged firms to increase their staffing levels for the first time in four months during May, the rate of job creation was only marginal amid signs that spare capacity remained in the private sector.

The weak pace of employment growth also partly reflected a relatively softer sentiment regarding the year-ahead outlook for activity. Although business expansion plans and predictions of further improvements in new orders supported positive forecasts, confidence dipped and was the second lowest on record.

More positively, firms increased their purchasing activity at a rapid and accelerated pace, with higher input buying helping companies to expand their inventories. Purchase prices continued to rise sharply, albeit at a slightly softer pace than in the previous survey period.

Higher costs for agricultural inputs such as animal feeds, and rising prices for industrial raw materials, were often mentioned. Staff costs were also up as companies offered higher pay to employees to reflect greater workloads.

Although output prices rose markedly in response to higher costs, the pace of inflation eased to the softest in just over three years as some firms offered discounts to stimulate demand.

 

 

CBN Debunks Naira Devaluation Report as Fake News

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has debunked a report by a national daily that it has devalued the Naira to N631 per dollar at the Importers and Exporters’ (I&E) window.

A top official of the apex bank, who told this medium that the report is completely false, warned that such reports could have serious adverse consequences for the economy.

According to the top official, the CBN has not changed its strategy of allowing a gradual convergence of the parallel and official market exchange rates.

“The report is not true.  The CBN has not devalued the Naira. The exchange rate of the Naira on the FMDQ website as at yesterday was N464.67 per dollar. The authors of the report may have their own agenda, but the CBN’s plan is that the best approach is to allow for a gradual convergence of all the rates.”

The said publication is to the effect that GNI Plc and Tangerine Africa Annuity businesses have been acquired by this particular Insurance Company.

This development is a crude attempt by an unscrupulous competitor to demarket our brand and shrink our share of the Annuity Insurance market.

In the last five (5) years, our Annuity Insurance portfolio has grown steadily by over 14,845% and our Annuitants have been enjoying value added services.

In view of the foregoing there is no basis for transferring our Annuity business to another company in the industry. We want to state emphatically that GNI Plc has not and does not intend to sell-off its Annuity business Portfolio, neither does it intend to partner with any Insurance company or companies in the Annuity insurance market.

This release therefore serves as a categorical disclaimer that our Company is not in any kind of partnership or merger discussion with any Insurance company regarding our Annuity Insurance Portfolio.

ITU Targets $100bn Funding by 2026 to Accelerate Global Digitalisation

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has issued a worldwide appeal calling to increase the value of pledges for digitalising the world from the current $30 billion to $100 billion by 2026.

The appeal by the United Nations specialised agency for information and communication technologies includes a focus on raising the level of resources for universal and meaningful connectivity and digital transformation in the world’s least developed countries (LDCs).

The announcement of the target was made on World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, observed annually to mark the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention and ITU’s founding in 1865.

“Tech is at the top of the global agenda, but the benefits of digital technology are still out of reach for too many people,” said ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin. “If we are serious about digitalizing the world in a way that is meaningful and sustainable, we must take action to accelerate digital transformation for everyone.”

In 2023, ITU’s anniversary is focused on empowering the least developed countries through information and communication technologies using the Partner2Connect Digital Coalition and its online pledging platform.

The ITU appeal to the public and private sectors encompasses a campaign launched in February 2022 by Partner2Connect to mobilise direct funding or other contributions for connectivity projects in countries registering the lowest on development. Of the $30 billion already pledged overall, Partner2Connect has identified commitments worth $12 billion to bring the LDCs online as quickly as possible.

The United Nations defines LDCs as countries that have low levels of income and face severe structural impediments to sustainable development. The call for resources, which comes as the UN strives to rescue its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, stresses the need for the globe’s digital transformation to be environmentally friendly.

“The digital revolution is a defining force of our era,” said United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. “As the Internet becomes ever more central to value creation and innovation, least developed countries risk falling further behind. We must dramatically improve accessibility and inclusivity and eliminate the digital divide.”

According to ITU data, 2.7 billion people worldwide were offline in 2022. The digital connectivity divide separating the least developed countries from the rest of the world is widening on key factors such as access, digital skills and affordability.

Though the globe’s 46 least developed countries are home to almost one-third of the world’s offline population, the Internet is considered to be affordable in only two of those countries.

At the event marking ITU’s anniversary in Geneva, ITU Secretary-General Bogdan-Martin announced SDG Digital Day, scheduled for 17 September in New York in advance of the UN SDG Summit to review the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

The SDG Digital Day, powered by ITU on behalf of the UN system, will showcase high-impact, sustainable, digitally based solutions that have a game-changing potential to accelerate progress on the SDGs.

Stanbic IBTC: 200 Students Benefits from N80m 2023 University Scholarship Award Scheme

A New book, ‘The Conversation,’ to Address Family Issues Unveiled

According to the author, Oludare Mayowa, the book is his first experiment in using the gift of conversation to engage his readers in free-flowing topics on the basic essentials of life, particularly relationships in the home, and to simplify what ordinarily looks like a mountain of problems among couples.

“My experience in writing this book has also changed my perspectives on many issues addressed in the book and helped to refocus my thoughts on the possibilities of sustaining a good home if couples could diligently work at it,” the author said.

Leading specialist life insurance company, Heirs Life Assurance (HLA), has announced the commencement of the second edition of its nationwide essay competition, Heirs Life Essay Championship, following the widespread success of the inaugural edition.

This year’s championship targets junior secondary students across Nigeria, promising to reward the winner with N2 million in scholarship and N500,000 worth of educational materials for the winner’s school, among other consolation prizes.

Students are expected to write and submit a 500-word essay on the topic, “My Dream Career”. Entries close on Monday, June 26, 2023.

Speaking on the commencement of the 2nd edition of the Essay Championship, the Chief Marketing Officer, Heirs Life Assurance, Ifesinachi Okpagu said:

Launched in 2022, the Heirs Life Essay Championship was created to support Nigerian students with effective writing skills while fostering a communal bond across educational institutions in the country. The inaugural edition attracted thousands of entries across 27 states, with 12–year–old, Ugbomyke Princewill Ebubechukwu and his school, Gateway Schools, Enugu, receiving the grand prize.

CHI: N4.4bn Claims Payment, N1.4bn Profit in 2022

Mr. Eddie Efekoha, Group Managing Director/CEO, Consolidated Hallmark Insurance Plc says the company recorded a 45% increase (over prior year) in Profit Before Taxation from N971.6m in 2021 to N1.407 billion in 2022.

Efekoha said at the 28th Annual Meeting (AGM) of the company in Lagos that Profit After Taxation also grew by 26% over prior year from N790.6 million in 2021 to N995.98 million in 2022. Also, through prudent underwriting, we were able to grow our underwriting profit by 24%.

On the business outlook, the CHI GMD said:

“On a positive note, the horizon looks bright as a plethora of factors point to a robust growth in insurance operations. We are optimistic of a more aggressive penetration of insurance services with technology. Our self- service portal www.einsurance.chiplc.com is expected to be more active going forward. Customers and prospects alike can access some of our key classes of insurance including Motor (Third Party, Comprehensive, CHI Prime (Third Party with limited own damage cover) and Goods-In-Transit. Linkage Assurance Gross Written Premium up 16% to N12.98bn in 2022

Amidst tough operating environment in the 2022 financial year, Linkage Assurance Plc has recorded positives in all performance indices.

In the 2022 full-year financial results made available to the investing public and published on NGX Limited, Linkage Assurance Plc recorded a gross written premium (GWP) of N12.98 billion, as against N11.16 billion in 2021, a 16 percent increase.

Able to effectively manage its risks during the review year, the underwriting firm also recorded N506.162 million underwriting profit, a growth of 120 percent when compared with the figure in 2021.

Linkage Assurance also strengthened its bottom-line with Profit Before Tax (PBT) N2.696 billion, and Profit After Tax closing at N2.567 billion.

With full maximisation of its investment returns, Linkage Assurance saw income from investment boosting bottom-line stronger after a successful underwriting year.

Total assets at the end of the review year stood at N39.998 billion, a 3 percent increase from N38.710 billion in the previous year.
