LG Reinforces Commitment to Customer Choice, Data Privacy, Secure Smart TV Experiences Across Nigerian Homes

As Nigerian consumers increasingly embrace smart home technology and connected entertainment, LG Electronics is reaffirming its commitment to delivering innovative Smart TV experiences that combine convenience, personalisation, security, and customer control.

Modern Smart TVs have evolved far beyond traditional television viewing. From voice-enabled searches and personalised content recommendations to seamless device connectivity and smart home integration, today’s TVs are designed to make entertainment easier, smarter, and more intuitive.

However, LG emphasises that these innovations are built with a clear focus on transparency, user choice, and privacy protection.

Putting Customers in Control

At the heart of LG’s Smart TV experience is customer empowerment. Features such as voice recognition, Automatic Content Recognition (ACR), personalised recommendations, and interest-based advertising remain optional and require users to actively opt in before they are activated.

Customers can choose which features they want to use, review permissions, adjust settings, or withdraw consent at any time directly from their TV settings without affecting core functions such as watching live television, streaming content, connecting devices, or receiving software updates.

“Technology should work for people, not the other way around,” said LG Electronics. “Our goal is to provide meaningful customer choice while delivering smarter and more personalised entertainment experiences.”

Voice Recognition Designed for Convenience, Not Surveillance

As voice-enabled technology gains popularity across Nigerian households, LG has clarified how voice recognition operates on its Smart TVs.

Voice control is disabled by default and only becomes active when users choose to enable the feature. The system responds only when a user deliberately initiates a voice command, either by pressing the microphone button on the remote or enabling hands-free voice control on compatible models.

Importantly, LG Smart TVs do not continuously record conversations or store ambient household discussions. When hands-free voice control is enabled, the television only listens locally for a specific wake word. Audio that does not contain the wake word is processed on the device and immediately discarded without being stored or transmitted.

Once a voice command is completed, the voice recognition session automatically ends, ensuring that only intentional interactions are processed.

Smarter Recommendations with User Consent

To help deliver more relevant content experiences, LG Smart TVs offer an optional feature called Automatic Content Recognition (ACR), which identifies what content is being viewed from supported sources.

This feature helps improve content discovery, audience insights, and viewing experiences while remaining fully under customer control. ACR is turned off by default and requires users to accept separate agreements before activation.

LG clarified that ACR does not collect screenshots, screen recordings, video captures, or voice recordings. Instead, it uses audio fingerprinting technology to recognize content without storing visual or audio media from users’ televisions.

Furthermore, personalised advertising services require separate user approval, ensuring Nigerians maintain full control over how their viewing information may be used.

Seamless Connectivity Across the Smart Home

With more Nigerian households adopting gaming consoles, streaming devices, decoders, home entertainment systems, and connected appliances, LG Smart TVs are designed to simplify connectivity.

Device discovery technology enables Smart TVs to recognise and communicate with compatible devices such as set-top boxes, gaming consoles, DVD players, and IoT-enabled products. This function allows users to enjoy a more seamless and integrated entertainment ecosystem.

LG stressed that information gathered to support device connectivity is used solely to facilitate those connections and is not used for household profiling or targeted advertising without additional user consent.

Security at the Core of the Smart TV Experience

As cyber security becomes an increasingly important consideration for consumers, LG continues to strengthen protection measures across its Smart TV platform.

The company operates a global Bug Bounty Programme and collaborates with independent security researchers to identify and address potential vulnerabilities before they can impact users.

LG also encourages customers to install the latest software updates to ensure continued protection and optimal performance.

Eligible TV models currently receive security updates for up to five years from the initial release of the applicable webOS platform version, helping consumers enjoy long-term confidence in their devices.

Meeting the Needs of Nigerian Consumers

With streaming services, live sports, local content platforms, gaming, and connected living becoming increasingly popular in Nigeria, consumers are seeking technology solutions that offer convenience without compromising privacy.

LG believes trust is essential to the future of connected entertainment. By combining industry-leading innovation with strong security protections, transparent privacy practices, and user-controlled settings, the company aims to help Nigerian families get the very best from their Smart TV experience.

Committed to Transparency and Innovation

As technology continues to evolve, LG says it will remain focused on strengthening privacy safeguards, enhancing security measures, and simplifying customer controls across its Smart TV ecosystem.

The company reaffirmed its commitment to delivering smart entertainment experiences that are not only innovative and personalised but also secure, transparent, and designed around the needs of modern consumers.
