NAFDAC: Emergence of Four New Units Strengthens Fight Against Fake Drugs

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration & Control (NAFDAC) is geared for enhanced performance with the creation of four new departments to strengthen its fight against fake and adulterated substances in the country. The new departments are: Drug and Chemical Evaluation & Research, Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, Pharmacovigilance and Post Marketing as well as Veterinary Medicine and Allied Products.

Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu, the Minister of Health, said while receiving the WHO Audit Report on Pre-qualification of Nigerian Pharmaceutical Companies, that the new departments was a direct response to the huge mandate of the Agency and to sustain its leading role as a global leader against fake substances.

Chukwu lauded the deployment of robust and cutting-edge technologies by NAFDAC in the discharge of its mandate, saying the new structure will bring new vigour in the current campaign against counterfeit medicines and other regulated products.

The minister assured pharmaceutical firms inNigeriaof government’s support and patronage, as well as creating more access for funding to boost expansion and capacity of the pharmaceutical industry inNigeria.

Dr. Paul Orhii, Director-General of NAFDAC, said the WHO Audit when completed will provide the industry access to international bids from global funds, boost their productive capacities and provide jobs in the country.
